COURSE COMPONENTS

ABOUT HDH

Hagley Dance Hub is an inquiry-driven, practice-led programme situating dance as an embodied, creative, and critically reflexive discipline.

 

​A full-time programme where students engage in technical training alongside choreographic inquiry, developing kinaesthetic awareness, alignment, and adaptability across diverse movement practices.

Grounded in global dance research, the programme draws on somatic approaches and intercultural perspectives, including Indigenous and European traditions.

Dance is positioned as both artistic expression and cultural dialogue.

Through studio-based exploration, improvisation, and collaborative creation, students:

  • Refine their creative voice

  • Develop critical thinking

  • Engage in embodied practice

Course Structure

  • Indigenous approaches to embodied practice

  • European approaches to technical training

  • Intercultural and hybrid movement inquiry

  • Choreographic development and performance

Students will:

  • Engage with guest artists and cultural practitioners

  • Create original choreographic work

  • Participate in workshops and community practice

  • Build pathways to tertiary study and careers

Future Pathways

Hagley Dance Hub offers a strong pathway into tertiary study and creative industries.

Students graduate with the technical, intellectual, and artistic confidence to thrive across a wide range of dance and movement contexts.

 

Course fees

If you are Under 19 the course is free as it is funded by the Ministry of Education.  You will need to pay $200 for external specialist tutors only.

If you are 19 years or over the course cost is $1800 for the year (plus enrolment fee)

College enrollment fee: maximum $200

Entry Requirements

Age 17+ Application, interview and audition.  The deadline for applications is Friday 16th October.

Hours Per Week

20 hours across four days - Monday to Thursday

about HDP

Hagley DANCE Project is an independent, part-time DANCE technique, choreography and performance course attached to Hagley College in Ōtautahi, Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.  Hagley DANCE Project is an off shoot of the full-time Hagley Dance Company course which celebrated 21 years of providing high quality tuition and Contemporary performance experiences to young people all over the country.  To apply for our 2024 intake, please submit your application form here
